Feasibility Studies #1

Simply put, a feasibility study is used to determine the potential to raise money for a particular project or purpose. It could be a business start-up, a social service program, or most typically the development or expansion of a new facility. The purpose is to gather objective data to allow the organization to make an informed decision on how to proceed.

Most organizations enter into a feasibility study to determine the potential success of an upcoming project, although there are occasions when an organization has enough foresight to analyze their organization and the existing marketplace simply for the purpose of measuring their potential and improving their services. Whatever the purpose, it is important to get an objective look at the landscape.

A few benefits of the feasibility study would include:

  • Providing objective information about the community your organization serves.
  • Determining who in the community might be collaborators or competitors for needed revenue.
  • Developing and expanding the board or leadership of an organization.
  • Determining the viability of raising the needed funds for a project or program.

The basic premise in each case is to lay a foundation for success and to clearly identify the obstacles and challenges along the way. In some cases a feasibility study may even help an organization to cut programs or make a determination that a campaign is not warranted at the present time.

Feasibility Coaching

Due to the rising cost of feasibility studies (we have recently seen some run as much as $30,000 to $50,000), Wheeler & Associates (WA) has developed a Feasibility Coaching Service (FCS). At Wheeler and Associates we have determined that no one knows your organization better than you do. Rather than bringing in an outside agency at an exorbitant expense, we have developed a program to work with your board or leadership team.

WA will come in and help you determine what questions to ask during the interview process, how to measure the need in your community and then we will train your staff and board in conducting the interviews. Once all the data is collected, WA will then compile the data and provide you a written report and analysis from the study. By using our coaching services your organization can save tens of thousands of dollars and when the project is finished, your board, staff and leadership team will have a much better grasp of the data and its impact on your organization.
